Vegetable Gardening Basics Workshop
Several of us from the conservancy attending the basic gardening workshop put on by the Highland Beautification Committee with speaker Janet Macunovich. It was packed and the presentation was very impressive! I can honestly say I learned so much I can’t remember it all. In a nutshell, here is what I did find out in a few nuggets: aerate the soil but don’t over-till it; plant a little of everything and experiment-no need to go crazy the first year; spread seeds and then thin (that’s so hard for me to snuff out those struggling little plants but necessary); rotate the crops each year; no need for heavy chemicals; sun and regular watering are crucial. There is so much more we learned but you can subscribe to an excellent newsletter if you like with tips on growing your own vegetables, flowers or trees and shrubs. Contact Janet Macunovich (former writer for Detroit News gardening column) at JMaxGarden at aol.com She has many upcoming workshops offering a wealth of gardening information. Don’t have anywhere to plant? Starting in early May, plots in the community garden at the entrance to Highland United Methodist Church will be available. Call Katheryn at 248-887-4643 for info.
Spring is the time to plant Trees
Global ReLeaf of Michigan is having its annual tree and shrub sale. Most 4 to 6 foot hardwood trees are $28 to $30 and 2 foot evergreens are $18 (3 or more for $15). All orders must be placed by April 9, 2009. For more information about Global ReLeaf of Michigan or for complete information on available trees or arranging a tree planting in your neighborhood, call 1-800-642-7353 or access their website at www.globalreleaf.org
Turn off your Lights
Tomorrow night, Saturday March 28th, everyone around the world is being asked to turn out their lights (inside and outside) from 8:30pm until 9:30pm. It is hoped that over 3 billion people will decide to do so and maybe, just maybe, we might have a small taste of the incredible beauty of our night sky without all the normal light pollution. This is being sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness of climate change and our need to help a planet in crisis. If you are interested in the Earth Hour project, go to: http://www.worldwildlife.org/sites/earthhour/index.html for more information. So please, pass this message on to turn out your lights at 8:30 tomorrow night, step outside... and enjoy the view.
Think Spring!
