VOLUNTEER TO HELP ON EARTH DAY!
The Huron Valley Earth Day team really needs your help! They are looking for
staff volunteers to work our local event on Sunday, April 20th, starting at
11:00 a.m. for set up at Milford Central Park. Orientation will begin at 11:00
am. Lunch will be provided. The event will go until 6:00 p.m. This is a great
way to support earth day (and get service hours if you are a boy scout!) If you
can volunteer for all or part, please email Andrea at hurongreen at yahoo.com. Or,
show up at the check-in booth by 11am on the day of the event.

TREE PLANTING IN TOWNSHIP PARK
Highland Conservancy is teaming up with the Highland United Methodist Church on
the churchs first ever GET OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY AND LIVE YOUR FAITH
action day on Sunday April 27th from 10:00am 12noon. Recently, members of the church
have entered into discussions with members of the conservancy about being better stewards of the planet and we are excited that this tree
planting event turns positive ideas into action. (On the 27th their youth group
is canoeing the Huron River and cleaning up debris and trash - super!) Members
from the conservancy and the church will plant red pine seedlings at Duck Lake
Pines Park (Duck Lake Road just south of M59). A special thank you also goes
out to Highland Township for donating 32 healthy red pine trees. On the 27th we
will dig holes, prepare soil, plant, mulch and water the trees. Rick Hamill, a
local tree expert and Mary Lloyd of the Highland Beautification Committee will
oversee the planting, following a specific landscaping plan.
Volunteers just need to bring a shovel if you have one.
GARLIC MUSTARD DASTARDLY DESTRUCTIVE
Its hard to believe that something that sounds like it should be in my salad
can be so destructive (yes, you can eat it). Yet once this invasive gets into
an area, it quickly smothers all native vegetation and pretty soon it will blanket the woods. Whats wrong with that? As with other invasive
plants, it pushes out the plants many creatures need to live on, upsetting
entire ecosystems. Join us Saturday, May 17th from 12:30 until 3:30 at our new
park, Highland Oaks for a few hours pulling garlic mustard. The event is hosted
by the Highland Conservancy and Oakland County Parks. We will meet at the
Milford Road parking area, a half mile north of White Lake Road. Meet new
friends and make a difference! Bring gardening clothes, boots, sunscreen and a
smile. Gloves, water and snacks will be provided. Contact Dave Pollard at
