September 2007 Highland Conservancy E-Newsletter:
Summer is waning and the trees up north are already tinged with color. School has started and its almost time to pull in the boats. Its time to stop traveling and get out another newsletter! Listed below are two upcoming events you might be interested in attending. We work closely with the Oakland Land Conservancy and they are sponsoring an excellent lecture with writer Stephen Small:
YOURE INVITED TO A FREE LECTURE WITH STEPHEN SMALL
The Oakland Land Conservancy has arranged for a free afternoon with Stephen J. Small, Esq., author of The Federal Tax Law of Conservation Easements and the series of books Preserving Family Lands, to talk about what recent tax incentives mean to landowners like you. This free lecture will be held this Thursday, September 13th, at the University of Michigan - Flint, from 2 to 4pm. It is designed especially for landowners. Mr. Small will discuss the expanded income tax incentives and estate tax savings, explaining how using conservation easements as well as proper income and estate tax planning can protect your land and keep it in your family.
You are also welcome to attend a morning workshop and lunchtime panel discussion entitled Tax Incentives for Private Land Protection from 9am-1:30pm. The morning workshop will be led by Mr. Small and Trey Brice, an attorney with Hafeli Staran Hallahan Christ & Dudek PC, who concentrates his practice in property taxation, real estate property and land use law. The morning and lunchtime sessions are designed for land trust staff and board members, attorneys, appraisers, and financial advisors, and will provide a deeper understanding of conservation tax law for those especially interested or with a base knowledge. If you would like us to invite your legal or financial counsel for the morning session, we would be happy to do so. The cost of the morning workshop and lunchtime panel discussion is $65 for nonprofit organizations and $85 for all others. Registration will open soon!
