Stephen J. Small, Esq. is a nationally known expert on federal income and
estate tax planning to help preserve valued family land, including planning
for the next generation of ownership. He is a tax attorney at his own
firm, the Law Office of Stephen J. Small, Esq., P.C., in Boston, and the
author of several books, including The Federal Tax Law of Conservation
Easements (Land Trust Alliance, 1985); and, Preserving Family Lands: Book
I, II, and III. The first two Preserving Family Lands books have sold more
than 100,000 copies.
Mr. Small will discuss the new tax incentives for land conservation passed
in 2006, changes in estate taxes, IRS rules for appraisals, section 2031(c)
"exclusion" and post-mortem easements, and succession planning for family
lands. This seminar is designed for tax and real estate attorneys,
appraisers, and financial advisers to address opportunities to use tax
incentives to protect private land.
Trey Brice, an attorney with Hafeli Staran Hallahan Christ & Dudek PC in
Bloomfield Hills, MI, will join Mr. Small for a lunchtime panel discussion.
Mr. Brice will discuss property tax issues, including the recent
elimination of the "pop-up" tax by the Michigan legislature, and how these
affect landowners in Michigan who are conserving their land through
conservation easements. Mr. Brice concentrates his practice in property
taxation, real estate property and land use law, representing individuals,
citizen groups, corporations, and governmental entities in all aspects of
land use and property taxation matters. He has lectured on land use law
and conservation easements in Michigan and currently sits on the City of
Huntington Woods Planning Commission.
